Python is a popular and powerful programming language that has long been a preferred backend tool in web development and is also quickly becoming the de-facto language of Data Science. This workshop is a hands-on introduction to Python programming for absolute beginners, with a focus on programming fundamentals and how you can use code to solve real-world problems. In this class, we will also discuss Python's role in the Data Science workflow, and dive into how to use Python for basic data analysis. This bootcamp is designed to teach core Python coding concepts through practical examples and guided practice, and is the basis of a semester-long course that the instructor is teaching at Harvard University this fall. How our sessions work We host these live online classes out of our office in Cambridge, MA. Guests tune in online to watch the live presentations. During each session as well as in between, we set up a Slack channel where students can collaborate and/or submit questions and have them answered by the instructor. You'll be sent the webinar access information and Slack invitation the week before the start of the course. This online-only bootcamp has three sessions, from 6:30pm - 8.00pm EST on August 16, 23 and 30. Curriculum Session 1: Wednesday, August 16, 6:30pm - 8pm EST - Python basics - The Jupyter environment - Simple data types Session 2: Wednesday, August 23, 6:30pm - 8pm EST - Functions - Compound data types - Data in the real world Session 3: Wednesday, August 30, 6:30pm - 8pm EST - if statements - for loops - Putting it all together: how scripts work Prerequisites no prior coding experience is required, but some comfort with computers is needed. please install the Anaconda distribution on your laptop before class. About the instructor Claudia Virlanuta Claudia is a Data Scientist and Co-Founder at Edlitera, an education company dedicated to enabling people to future-proof themselves and close the technical skills gap. In addition to her role at Edlitera, Claudia also holds an Adjunct Faculty position at Harvard University. Prior to starting Edlitera, Claudia earned her degree in Economics from Yale, and worked in biotech, marketing technology, and most recently in ecommerce on Wayfair’s Data Science team. She is a passionate advocate for diversity in tech, and she is also the founder of Data Women, a Boston-area group for women in Data Science and Analytics.
